Creativity & Art Therapy

I first began using art as my own form of therapy. My work naturally came out in abstract forms, but I had always wanted to be able to draw something tangible, so I went to TAFE in Tasmania to study art.

I tried drawing leaves, still lifes, three-dimensional buildings and all the things I thought I should be able to draw. One of my teachers began working with me on my abstract forms instead and helped me become more comfortable with the way I naturally created. About ten years later, that journey eventually led me to study Art Therapy.

Over the years I have seen the healing that can happen through the simple process of making something. I have watched people slow down over a day of painting furniture, become completely absorbed in what they are doing and feel incredibly proud of what they have created. While they may see the finished piece, I can also see what has been happening quietly along the way.

That is what I love about Art Therapy. It isn't about the finished artwork or being good at art. It is about the process and what can happen within us while we create.

When I use Art Therapy and journaling with clients today, they are often surprised by how much can come from a seemingly simple activity. A symbol, a colour, a mark on a page or scratching shapes into a form can bring forward thoughts, feelings and information we may not have reached through words alone.

What Happens in Art Therapy?

Art Therapy is not about creating a perfect picture or being able to draw. The focus is on the process of creating and what may come up for you along the way.

A session might involve drawing, colour, symbols, collage, journaling or other creative activities. Sometimes something very simple on a page can reveal thoughts, feelings or patterns that we hadn't recognised before.

We can then look at what you have created together, what it means to you and what you notice within it. There is no right or wrong way to do it, and you don't need any previous art experience.
